Camiguin Island is a small pear-shaped island of the northern part of Mindanao immediately facing Bohol Island up north. Dubbed as “the island born of fire” as it has been historically known to have been formed from series of volcanic eruptions from beneath the ocean.
A very small island of just 64km fully concrete circumferential rode, this island boasts of the many beautiful tourists spots as numerous waterfalls, cold and hotsprings, black sand and white sand beaches, as well as a white sand islet known as Mantigue or MagsaysayIsland, and a sand bar knows as White Island or Medano Island. for the adrenaline junkies, you may opt the trek the rugged terrains to search for the grandeur of the majestic Binangawan (Rainbow) Falls, a name derived due to the rainbow halo that becomes visible when the sun is in the 3:00 o’clock position where in its light casts directly perpendicular to the mist created by the falls. One may also climb either of the two twoering peaks of the island, the Mt. Hibok-hibok and Mt. Timpong. Mt Timpong in the highest peak in the island where in its climbed can be completed in two days with an overnight stay in a campsite. Mt Hibok-hibok on the other hand is more popular to hickers and climbers since it can be completed in just an average of 6-7hrs. All the climbs in Camiguin needs a permit from the DENR and an accredited guide whom can facilitate you the needed permits to save you the hassle of going to the DENR office. But in essence, it is the very warm, and hospitable people of the island that is the true beauty of the place.
Several routes can be taken to access the island, either by land, by sea or by air. land route is the most common and the oldest form of access. from Cagayan de Oro City, one can take either a bus or v-hire fromt he Agora Bus Terminal to the Balingoan Port where one cn take a ferry to the island. CDO-Blaingoan land trip will take about 1.5-2hrs and the ferry ride to the island takes about an hour, just add few minutes to an hour waiting time in the Balingoan Port for the ferry schedules depending on your time of arrival at the port. However, in the recent times, there are already v-hire services going in and out of the island that conveniently transfers passengers from the Agora Bus Terminal straight to Mambajao, taking away the inconvenience of alighting from the bus or van, buying fery tickets and paying for terminal fees and embarking and disembarking the ferry to transfer again to a van or jeep upon arrival at the Camiguin Port. For only P475.00 you will have the convenience of embarking on a v-hire, and disembarking in Mambajao, or straight to your resort of accommodation as you could arrange this in advance for just a few pesos more if your resort is outside the capital town of Mambajao westward. Same is true on your way back to Cagayan de Oro from Mambajao.
For visitors coming from the Gingoog, Butuan and Surigao side, they may as well take a v-hire or bus to the Balingoan Port and get a ferry to Camiguin Island.
One may also take a direct Roro trip on daily basis from Jagna, Bohol to Benone. Such trip takes 4hrs on broad day light via Super Shuttle Ferry, giving passengers a scenic trip crossing the Bohol sea with occasional sightings of dolphins especially during summer.
From Cebu, one can take a direct flight from Mactan International Airport with daily flights via Cebu Pacific Air. Please check their website for best fare deals. Another alternative would be an overnight ferry ride every Friday via Super Shuttle Ferry departing Pier 1 in Cebu Port Terminal at 8:00pm.
Prepare yourself to be awed by Mother Nature on your visit to Camiguin. At the end of your visit, you will certainly plan to come back as you will be mesmerized by the island’s beauty, and that you will realize that the name Camiguin, actually means “Come Again…”
